Working for change
From innovate startups and media companies to progressive organizations with a global impact, I'm passionate about working with companies driven to change the world.
As The Dodo's first social media hire, I was part of the small team that turned this big idea into a reality, hitting one million unique visitors in the first month and 10 million pageviews in the first five months.
Discovery Communications: TreeHugger.com & Planet Green
At Discovery Communications, I created the Social Media Editor position and led social strategy and partnerships for TreeHugger.com and Planet Green, the first 24-hour eco-lifestyle network.
As a writer for TreeHugger, I covered the growing eco-movement, with a focus on environmental politics, culture, wildlife conservation, sustainable design and art .
For Planet Green, I led social strategy and activations to support the network's television programming.
The Raw Story
This independent news outlet was an early pioneer in the political blogosphere and remains a popular outlet for progressive news. As one of The Raw Story's first employees, I oversaw advertising sales and later shifted to editorial as a writer and front page editor.
The World Company
I learned so much about the internet and innovation while working for the Lawrence Journal-World, a small-town, family-owned newspaper in Kansas that The New York Times once called "the newspaper of the future" and where the Django web framework was created. On the business side, I sold print, TV and digital advertising. On Lawrence.com, the company's innovative website and alt-weekly, I managed web and print advertising and wrote a blog about culture and politics.
